Traditionally, the abalone shell is used for ceremonial purposes to catch the ash from a smudge bundle when burning. It may also be used to extinguish a smudge bundle after burning. Many people like to use these shells as a natural container to burn sage and other botanicals. We advise extreme caution when doing this and rather suggest using a heat safe bowl when charcoal is involved. You can also use them to cut your own abalone conch discs if you're adventurous. Sizes vary but average about 6 to 7 inches in length.
